We love our Tutors and want to celebrate the many gifts and talents they bring to their chess lessons! Check out our interview with our November Tutor of the Month, Mafalda!
Where are you from and where do you live now?
I'm from Portugal and I live in California.
What's your favorite game besides chess?
I love Codenames.
Can you recall a particularly special or impressive moment from a Chess at Three lesson?
I had something pretty cool happen in an online class recently! One of the kids I teach invented his own five-move chess opening/checkmate. We tried it out against random players online and, at first, it wasn't working. But after we made some adjustments and kept trying, it worked! He won against three different people that day using the opening he had invented. I was extremely proud. It felt like a true victory!
What's your favorite story from the Chess at Three curriculum?
The King Deboulajae chess notation series!
You're an amazing, in-demand tutor. What's your secret?
My best quality in teaching is my ability to connect with each student at a personal level. Every kid is different; they learn differently and they require different things. Being able to cater a class to what each child needs is what I've always tried to do!
