It’s time to announce our December Tutor of the Month: Lexie! Lexie is one of our best tutors. She came to NYC from Seattle after college, to pursue a career in acting. Her positive energy and fun attitude make our stories come alive for her students. Here’s a little bit more about Lexie.
How long have you worked for Chess at 3?
I have had the pleasure of working with Chess at Three for almost a year.
What’s your favorite book?
At the moment, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. But it honestly depends on the day. There are a lot of great books out there.
What’s your favorite spot in NYC?
South Street Seaport. The tree during the holidays is gorgeous and I love sitting by the water and watching the boats go by when it’s warm.
What’s your favorite story from our chess curriculum?
“Secret Mission #1” is one of my favorites. I love the setup of Casanova the Dragon and his grand journey to see Thalia the Octopus.
What’s been your favorite moment as a teacher?
My favorite moment is always when a student requests a game or exercise we’ve played before but they haven’t quite mastered yet. It’s the beginnings of grit and the desire to keep trying to accomplish something difficult that are so awesome to watch. I have the pleasure of working with very tough and talented chess players!
Do you have any fun hobbies?
Yoga; there’s something about intentional deep breaths and going upside down that changes your perspective in the best way.
What makes you a great Chess at 3 tutor?
I walk into every lesson ready to learn as much as my student does, whether that’s discovering a better way to explain something, a new twist on a standard warm-up game, or the plot of the newest Frozen movie. My students have so much to teach me. I am a better teacher and a better mentor when I ready myself to learn from them. The days are few and far between when I don’t benefit from the joy and surprising wisdom of one of my players.
Thanks for being such a great member of the team, Lexie!
